Commercial Tree Removal In North East England

If a tree needs removing, the quote should cover more than cutting it down. We look at whether removal is the right option, how to do the work around buildings and busy areas, and what will happen to the timber, stump and ground afterwards.

Deciding that a tree has to come out

Trees are removed where they are dead or beyond recovery, where a defect cannot be managed by pruning, where they are causing damage, or where the site itself is changing. Where a tree is protected, or stands in a conservation area, the position on consent or notice is confirmed before work is booked.

If the decision needs arboricultural or structural advice, ask your appointed arboriculturist or engineer to assess it. Their recommendations should form part of the brief, rather than leaving that decision to the removal contractor alone.

What changes the method and the price

Near buildings or areas normally in use, a tree usually needs dismantling in sections. We lower the sections using ropes and rigging rather than dropping them. This takes longer and needs more equipment than felling in one piece. Your quote makes clear which method is included.

• Space to work and where the tree can fall if it is felled in one piece
• What is below the tree: buildings, car parks, footpaths, services, street furniture and planting to keep
• Machinery access, including gate widths, ground strength and turning space
• Underground services, drains and overhead lines that affect where machinery can stand
• Age, species, lean, decay and the condition of the stem and root plate
• Working hours and any restriction on when the site can be closed or occupied
• Where the timber, brash and chippings are going

What we need before quoting a removal

Send the site address, what the tree is near, and photographs taken from a safe position showing the tree, the ground around it and the route machinery would take. Tell us about buried services if you hold the drawings, and about anything that has to stay open while the work happens.

Timber, stumps and the ground afterwards

We agree whether timber and branches stay on site or are removed. Material classed as waste is handled under the waste duty of care, with the required records. Stump work is priced separately. The grinding depth depends on what you will use the ground for, and the quote says whether and how the hole will be filled.

Tree removal does not include preparing the ground for construction, seeding or hardstanding. That work needs a separate specification and price, including any machinery and surface repairs required.

• Reinstatement of surfaces, kerbs, drainage or planting areas
• Groundworks, excavation and soil disposal
• Consent applications, ecology surveys and planning fees

Getting a quote

• Site address, tree locations and photographs of the tree and access
• Anything the tree is over, or close to, including services and retained trees
• The access route, gate widths and where a chipper or crane can stand
• Any Tree Preservation Order, conservation area, planning or licence position you hold
• Whether the stump is staying, being ground, or being removed for construction
