The Situation
A line of mature leylandii overhangs a business park car park and footpath. Debris lands on vehicles and the trees block light to the units behind.
The site manager is considering removal rather than repeated cutting back. Before pricing, the contractor needs to check the trees, permissions and access.
What Has To Be Settled Before Work Starts
- Consent position. Whether any tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area is checked with the local planning authority before work is booked. Consent and notice sit with the tree owner, not the contractor.
- Method. Whether the trees can be felled into open ground or need sectional removal, with affected parking bays and paths closed.
- Access and phasing. Which bays close, when the footpath is diverted, where the chipper can stand and what the delivery route needs.
- Stumps. Whether they are ground out or cut flush, and what depth the next use of the ground requires.
- Arisings. Whether material is chipped and left, stacked, or taken off site.
How The Work Would Be Planned
Affected parking bays would be cleared and the footpath closed or diverted before cutting starts. Where sectional removal is needed, branches would be lowered into a controlled work area.
Ground protection would be agreed for machinery routes. Work could be phased around busy periods, with any early starts or weekend access arranged with the site manager.
Stump grinding depth would be agreed around the next use of the ground. The quote would list removal of grindings and backfilling separately.

- A completion record referencing each tree, with photographs where they help
- Waste documentation for anything that left site
