What do you need the pruning to achieve?

Each objective leads to a different specification and a different price. Two trees of the same size can need very different work depending on what has to be cleared and what has to stay.

• Pedestrian clearance and sight lines at entrances, crossings and car park exits
• Separation from buildings, cladding, roofs, gutters and lighting columns
• Keeping the screening that trees provide while managing their growth
• Light to windows, units and solar panels
• Structural work: deadwood, crossing limbs, weak forks and storm damage

Reduction, lifting and thinning solve different problems

Crown reduction cuts branches back to suitable growth points, reducing the tree's overall size while keeping its shape. It can help when a tree has outgrown its space, but a reduction alone does not guarantee that a tree is safe.

Crown lifting removes lower branches to raise the canopy, giving clearance for vehicles, pedestrians and sight lines. It does not reduce the upper crown.

Thinning removes selected branches through the crown to let more light and air through without changing the tree's size. It is often asked for where light is the problem and the tree is staying.

Deadwooding and the removal of storm-damaged limbs is safety work, and on a site with people or property underneath it is usually the first thing to do, whatever else is specified.

Working over vehicles, footpaths and buildings

Buildings and other fixed features often sit below the branches we need to prune. We lower sections using ropes and rigging rather than dropping them, and mark out and keep clear the areas below. The method statement explains how we manage the work area.

If a car park or footpath needs to remain in use, we plan the work around it. We agree parking bay closures, temporary routes and working hours before the job starts.

Specification and standards

A crown reduction, thin and lift involve different work and are priced accordingly. The specification sets out how much is to be removed, the pruning points where specified and what will remain. We carry out tree work to British Standard 3998.

How a tree responds depends on its species, age, condition and the season. Working to a standard cannot guarantee its recovery. For a declining tree, pruning may only be a temporary option rather than a lasting solution.

What we need before quoting

Describe the problem in your own words: what needs clearing, what must stay and who or what is underneath. Send the tree locations and photographs taken from a safe position, plus any specification, survey or consent you already have. For protected trees, we check the consent position before booking. The tree owner remains responsible for the necessary consent or notice.
