Start with what will replace the stump
“Remove the stump” can mean different things to a grounds team, a fencing contractor and a builder. The intended use is part of the specification.

A stump grinder removes wood within an agreed area and depth. Roots outside that area can remain. Removing the visible stump is not a certificate that the ground is ready for construction.

What your quotation will define
We agree the stumps to be worked on and how each will be identified. For several stumps, a marked plan or numbered photographs are particularly useful.
The quotation sets out:
- Which stumps are included and the agreed working area around each.
- The grinding depth and the ground level from which it is measured.
- Access arrangements and any working restrictions.
- What happens to the grindings and other material produced.
- The condition in which the work area will be left.
- Any separately priced work, exclusions and assumptions.
If the required depth cannot be achieved because of a service, obstruction or other constraint, the affected item needs a recorded decision. It should not disappear into a general statement that the job is complete.
Access is more than the gate width
A machine needs a usable route to the stump and room to work when it gets there. Photos of the route are often as helpful as a close-up of the stump.
Tell us about steps, sharp turns, slopes, soft ground, narrow passages and surfaces that need protecting. Include restrictions on vehicle weights, parking, delivery times and where equipment can stand.
At occupied premises, we also need to agree how people and vehicles will be kept clear of the working area. Access and protection requirements are assessed before the work is booked; a photograph alone cannot settle every site constraint.
Underground services need checking
Stumps may sit close to lighting supplies, drainage, irrigation or other buried services. Supply the records you hold and tell us about previous alterations, including private cables that might not appear on utility plans.
We agree the necessary checks and work limits before grinding. An unrecorded service or uncertainty about its position can change the method or prevent part of the work from proceeding.

Decide who takes the ground from “ground out” to finished
Grinding produces material that must be dealt with. Your quote states whether it remains in an agreed place or is removed, and what temporary condition is left for the next contractor.
Topsoil, turf, planting, engineered fill, compaction and repairs to hard surfaces are separate items unless expressly included. Where these are outside our scope, agree the next contractor and the timing before the grinding starts. Any temporary barrier or restriction needed between the two jobs should also have an owner.
This is particularly useful when a property manager is approving the stump work but another company is completing the landscape or surfacing package.

Questions about commercial stump removal
Can you grind stumps left by another contractor?
Yes. Send the details of what remains, along with access photographs and the intended use of the ground. We will assess the scope and quote for the stump work.
Does stump grinding remove every root?
No. Grinding works within the agreed area and depth. If a construction or planting specification requires more extensive removal, raise it before accepting a grinding quote.
Can you work while the premises remain open?
That depends on the location and whether a suitable working area can be separated from people and vehicles. Tell us what must remain accessible. We can discuss phasing or a different work window and confirm the arrangement in the quote.
Can I get a fixed price from photographs?
Photographs help us understand the job, but access, services and the required finish may need a visit. We will explain what is needed before providing the written quotation.
